The AI CRM buys the voice of the customer
SAN FRANCISCO, California — Salesforce has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Listen Labs, an AI-powered customer research and human simulation platform, the company announced on 29 September 2026 (opens in a new tab). Listen Labs' AI agents design studies, recruit participants, conduct in-depth interviews and synthesise the findings in a single platform, compressing a research cycle that traditionally takes months into days.
For Salesforce, the self-described "#1 AI CRM", the deal adds something its systems of record have never fully captured: the reasons behind customer behaviour, gathered from real conversations at scale. Salesforce says the acquisition will complement Marketing Cloud, Service Cloud and its broader AI portfolio, letting companies "move beyond static surveys and traditional market research to understand — and even simulate — what customers will do and why." We read it as a clear statement that first-party customer understanding is becoming core infrastructure for agentic software, not a separate research budget. The sections below cover what was agreed, what Listen Labs has built, the strategic rationale and the path to close.

Listen Labs' AI moderator holds a real conversation with each participant and asks follow-up questions, then traces every finding back to the interview it came from.

Part I
The deal
What was signed, and the research platform at the centre of it.
What was agreed
A signed definitive agreement, with the founders and team staying on inside Salesforce AI Labs and closing expected in Salesforce's fiscal fourth quarter.
The announcement is short and precise. Salesforce "has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Listen Labs", and the transaction "is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal year 2027, subject to satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including the receipt of required regulatory clearance." Salesforce's fiscal year runs to 31 January, so that window is November 2026 to January 2027.
The deal was led on the Salesforce side by Aman Naimat, President of AI Labs. "Listen Labs has reimagined customer experience, market research, and customer simulation with AI agents that can conduct meaningful research and uncover context behind customer and user feedback," he said. "We look forward to expanding access to these agentic capabilities through Salesforce, helping more companies and governments make faster, better-informed decisions."
Companies have always wanted to hear from every customer, but until now it was only possible to talk to a handful. With AI, a company can now have thousands of real conversations at once and even simulate how customers will respond before making a move.
Team and continuity
In his own post (opens in a new tab), Wahlforss told customers that "our mission remains the same. I stay CEO, Florian stays CTO and the same team will keep building the product you rely on, now inside Salesforce AI Labs." He also explained how the deal came about: Listen's growth "quickly accelerated and while we were raising our next round, we met Marc Benioff." In other words, the business was in the middle of a growth raise when it chose a strategic home instead, which tells us about the strength of its position at signing.
Founder retention matters a great deal in a deal like this. The value sits in a fast-moving product and the research team that shapes it, and keeping both intact is the most direct way to protect it through integration. We cover the product fit in Part II.

Listen Labs was raising its next round when its founders met Marc Benioff. The company chose a strategic home over another venture round.
What Listen Labs has built
A hackathon AI interviewer grew into an end-to-end research platform with a 50M+ participant network, 120+ languages, and customers including Microsoft, Anthropic and Sweetgreen.
Listen Labs started with a simple problem. In January 2023 its founders had built an app that "went viral and picked up 20,000 users overnight. We had no idea who they were. So over a hackathon, we built an AI that could interview them." That hackathon project became the company. Listen launched in April 2025 (opens in a new tab) and today works with companies including Microsoft, Anthropic and Sweetgreen.
Growth followed quickly. In its January 2026 Series B announcement (opens in a new tab), the company said that since launching nine months earlier it had "grown its annualized revenue by 15x and interviewed more than one million people", helping "hundreds of companies bring real customers into their biggest decisions." The round was led by Ribbit Capital with participation from Evantic, Sequoia Capital, Conviction and Pear VC, bringing total funding to US$100 million.
One platform, from question to insight
The Listen Labs platform (opens in a new tab) runs the whole research lifecycle in five steps:
- Design the study. Listen drafts objectives, questions and probing context from the team's goal, or works from an uploaded interview guide.
- Reach the right people. Participants are qualified from a global network of 50M+, including hard-to-reach audiences, or from the customer's own contact list.
- Interview at scale. An AI moderator holds a real conversation with smart follow-ups, globally, 24/7, in 120+ languages.
- Deliver results. Listen builds deliverables from highlight reels to boardroom-ready slides, and every claim traces back to a real interview.
- Compound learnings. Past studies, themes and reports stay searchable, so each study builds on the last.

Study design: Listen drafts objectives and questions from a team's goal in seconds.

Interviews run around the clock in more than 120 languages, across a 50M+ participant network.
Product releases have kept pace through 2026. The company blog (opens in a new tab) lists a Research Agent (February), Research Library (April), MaxDiff (July), Pulse, a conversational tracker (August), and Gabor-Granger price tests (September). Listen also made the IA40 list for the second year running and was shortlisted for an ESOMAR 2026 regional award with Sweetgreen. It supports use cases from concept and creative testing to usability studies, B2B expert interviews and always-on brand tracking.

Part II
The logic
Why Salesforce wants it, and where it lands in the product.
Why Salesforce wants it
Salesforce's agents act on customer data. Listen Labs adds the reasons behind that data, from real conversations, which makes agents better informed and decisions faster.
A CRM is very good at recording what customers did: what they bought, which emails they opened, which cases they raised. It is much weaker at explaining why. That gap has traditionally been filled by market research, run on a separate budget, by separate teams, on a timescale of weeks or months. Listen Labs closes the gap by making qualitative research fast enough to sit inside day-to-day operations.
Salesforce's own framing is telling. The release says Listen Labs turns "qualitative feedback into actionable insights for decision-makers and context for agents at scale." The second half of that sentence is the strategic point. Agents that act on customers' behalf work better with grounded context about customer intent, preferences and objections. A continuously refreshed library of real interviews supplies that context directly.
The second half of Salesforce's sentence is the strategic point: insights for decision-makers, and context for agents at scale.
The timing fits Salesforce's wider agenda. Two weeks before the announcement, at Dreamforce 2026, Salesforce unveiled AIforce (opens in a new tab), "bringing the full power of its platform to any interface." Acquiring Listen Labs adds a distinctive data source to that platform: first-party conversational evidence about customers that Salesforce customers can generate on demand.

Both companies are based in San Francisco. Listen Labs' office on 2nd Street sits a short walk from Salesforce's headquarters.
Where Listen Labs lands in Salesforce
Salesforce names Marketing Cloud and Service Cloud as the first homes, with research insight feeding both campaign decisions and service agents.
Salesforce says the acquisition will expand its "customer and user understanding capabilities, complementing Marketing Cloud, Service Cloud, and our broader AI portfolio." Each of those homes is a natural fit for one part of Listen's platform.
Marketing Cloud: test before you spend
Listen's creative and message testing lets teams test "messaging, positioning, and creative for maximum impact, from taglines to finished ads." Inside a marketing platform that already runs the campaigns, that testing can happen before budget is committed rather than after results come in. Listen's customer quotes describe the effect: one CEO said they "didn't cut our research budget. We're just doing 10 times more and being able to move much quicker."
Service Cloud: the why behind the case
Service teams see what goes wrong; they rarely get time to ask customers why. Always-on conversational research, such as Listen's Pulse tracker, can add that layer and feed it to both human agents and AI agents. Naimat's reference to helping "companies and governments" also suggests the capability will reach Salesforce's public-sector customers.

Salesforce names Service Cloud as a first home for Listen Labs, adding the reasons behind customer contact to the cases themselves.
Digital twins: simulating the customer
Listen Labs' digital twins generate simulated responses grounded in real customer behaviour, so teams can compare options before testing them with people.
The most forward-looking part of the deal is simulation. Salesforce describes Listen Labs' digital twins as "AI simulations grounded in real customer behavior" that "generate simulated responses that help teams and agents compare approaches and refine their plans before further customer or user testing." Wahlforss puts it more simply: a company can "even simulate how customers will respond before making a move."
The phrase that matters is "grounded in real customer behavior". Simulations are only as good as the evidence underneath them, and Listen's core business produces that evidence continuously, from more than a million interviews so far. Each new study improves the base the simulations draw on. Salesforce positions the twins as a step before real testing, not a replacement for it, which is the right way to build trust in the output.

Digital twins let teams compare two concepts against simulated customers before taking the stronger one into live research.
Listen's site shows why this matters to decision-makers. It highlights the "say / do gap": the distance between what people say they will do and what they actually choose, such as saying they value sustainable materials and then picking the cheaper option. Measuring that gap, then simulating around it, is the kind of insight that changes product and pricing decisions. Listen's September 2026 Gabor-Granger price tests (opens in a new tab) extend the same idea to pricing.

What comes next
The path to close and the signals worth tracking.
The path to close
Closing is expected between November 2026 and January 2027, subject to customary conditions including regulatory clearance.
The disclosed timeline is straightforward. The agreement was signed and announced on 29 September 2026 and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of Salesforce's fiscal 2027, subject to customary conditions including required regulatory clearance. Until then, the two companies operate separately, and Listen continues to serve its existing customers.

Integration signals to watch
- Product naming. Whether Listen keeps its brand or becomes a named Salesforce capability inside Marketing Cloud and Service Cloud.
- Agent access. How quickly Salesforce's agents can query the research library as context, which is the core of the strategic rationale.
- Pricing and packaging. Whether research is sold per study, per seat or bundled into existing cloud editions.
- Independent customers. How Listen continues to serve customers that are not on Salesforce, which today include AI companies such as Anthropic and Cognition.
What it means for the market
AI is collapsing the cost of qualitative research, and platforms are moving to own it. Founders building AI-native research and insight tools now have a clear strategic buyer universe.
Listen's Series B post captured the old trade-off well: "Quantitative research is fast, but delivers more trends than truth. And qualitative research is costly and can take months, putting it out of reach for many companies." AI moderators remove that trade-off, delivering interview depth at survey speed. One customer described it as "100 studies for the price, at least in terms of time, of five or six."
When a capability becomes this much cheaper and faster, it moves from an occasional project to a continuous input, and continuous inputs get built into platforms. Salesforce's move makes customer research part of the system that runs marketing, service and agents. We expect other large platforms to look closely at the same layer, and the growth Listen reported points to strong demand from buyers of research.
